Across our privileged culture, women are returning to the creativity and productivity of our foremothers as we are learning to balance our time as mothers and wives and professionals with our abilities to use various skills in producing unique and quality items with our own two hands.
Often we do this for our own sense of accomplishment or to decrease our dependence on store bought goods. Sometimes we use the homemaking trades of the past to reduce our waste and carbon footprint or to teach self reliance to our children. But many of us have found an additional outlet for our creative spirits by making items to sell. Sometimes practical, sometimes purely artistic, we all have talents worth sharing.
But what if we could share the fruit of our labors with women half way across the world? What if our combined efforts could pay for a woman's fistula surgery in Ethiopia, or buy the freedom of young girls working as sex slaves in Cambodia and India? What if we could pay for a year's worth of education for a girl in rural China? Or a uniform for a girl in South Africa that would keep her in school for 18 months longer and help her to avoid early marriage and pregnancy? What if we could contribute to the small lending circles of women entrepreneurs in Afghanistan?
Would you like to be a part of these efforts? Would you like to use your talents to increase the impact of your heart and hands by donating crafts and items to sell that will be used to fund these endeavors? If you are interested in joining us as we take on the challenge of the Half the Sky movement to directly empower impoverished and oppressed women and girls, please contact us at talentsofsisters@gmail.com
Our Contact page will have further instructions on what to include on your own Etsy listings, or if you don't have an Etsy shop, it will clarify how to send us details that will allow us to provide a listing for you.
Local:
We are also looking for women to organize various crafters guilds local to them. Within church congregations and secular communities, there exists a wide range of talents that can be used for profit to benefit the less privileged. Farmer's markets are a wonderful opportunity for selling items, especially baked goods if that is your talent, and we are hoping to centralize a resource and listing of these groups as they begin to form.
Blog:
As we begin to raise funds, our blog will be dedicated to sharing the details and telling the stories of the women and girls that we are directly aiding and empowering. We will connect with them in whatever forms are available to us and keep you updated and informed on the ways that your donations have made an impact.
Let's multiply our talents for our sisters!
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12: 6-8
